Gran triunfo en los últimos metros de Tao Geoghegan Hart relegando al australiano Jai Hendley. Con estos tiempos logrados, por primera vez en la historia del Giro, llegan en la general 2 ciclistas empatados en tiempos y todo se decidirá en la crono (contra reloj) del domingo.

Inicio en el llano, que al llegar a los primeros 103 km corridos mostraba a un liderato con 21 ciclistas que aventajaban por 7 minutos al pelotón. Los fugados fueron: Geoffrey Bouchard, Andrea Vendrame, Jan Tratnik, Filippo Fiorelli, Kamil Maecki, Elia Viviani, Davide Ballerini, Mikkel Honoré, Pieter Serry, Tanel Kangert, Arnaud Démare, Simon Guglielmi, Davide Cimolai, Matthew Holmes, Einer Rubio, Davide Villella, Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier, Matteo Sobrero, Julien Bernard, Nicola Conci, y Brandon McNulty.

A 72 km de la meta encaran la subida del Sestriere, aunque a un ritmo menor al esperado. Kilómetros más adelante el pelotón se divide, a causa de las exigencias de tantos días de carrera. A 33 del arribo, Davide Ballerini muestra su capacidad y aventaja por 1’ 25’’ a sus seguidores, teniendo a 3’ 55’’ al pelotón. Inmediatamente ingresan en la subida final de Cesana Torinese (11,4 km al 5,9%).

Entrando en los últimos 29 km, es Rohan Dennis el que toma la cabeza del pelotón. Arriba se sitúan Hindley, Dennis y Tao Geoghegan Hart seguidos por Bilbao, Kelderman y Almeida. Minutos después, Hindley se transforma en el líder de la general. Cuando apenas faltaban 5 km, desde el equipo –al parecer- le pidieron a Dennis que ‘levante el pie’. Kelderman continuaba perdiendo segundos, relegado a 1’ 43’’. Mientras, Hindley se consolida adelante.

Los últimos 2.000 metros encuentran a Almeida reaccionando, al igual que Bilbao. Avanzan los metros finales y se queda Dennis, mientras la pelea se concentra en Hindley y Tao. Una mano mano en plena subida, donde no se otorgan ventajas, hasta que Tao Geoghegan Hart se adelanta y triunfa.
